Russian PM Urges Normalizing Situation in Dagestan Republic

Russian Prime Minister Sergei Stepashin on Saturday ordered the
armed forces chief of staff and the Interior Ministry forces chief to
normalize the situation in the Dagestan republic, the Itar-Tass news
agency reported.
The order came amid reports that about 500 armed Chechen militants
infiltrated into Dagestan early Saturday and trenched near the
villages of Ansalta and Rakhata in the mountainous Botlikhsky
district.
The armed Chechen group is believed to include Arabs and people
from Central Asia, Tass quoted the Dagestani interior ministry as
saying.
