Way Found to Resolve Aging Drift of Rubidium Atomic Timers

Scientists from Beijing University have found the causes of the ageing drift of rubidium atomic timers, after 20 years of studies.

Atomic timers are precision instruments which provide standard frequency and time, mostly used in high-tech fields. They are specifically used in areas such as aviation where micro-second timing is critical.

Scientists from the radio and electronics department at the Beijing University started to develop rubidium atomic timers in 1973.

They found that the ageing drift of rubidium atomic timers is caused by collision frequency and light frequency shifts.
