Today, paradise is so banal and the language used to describe it
is not much better. Open any tourist brochure or listen wanly to most
television holiday programmes and you'll see what I mean. Beaches are
always deserted, pools always palm-fringed and the waters are
inevitably azure blue.
It's with relief that one turns to the richly dense visions of
paradise produced by Old Master painters, people who understood that
