Opium War Hero's Birthday Celebrated

Lin Zexu, a national hero who burned stocks of smuggled opium 155 years ago, was praised here as a patriot.

A grand ceremony in this capital city of southeast China's Fujian province was held Monday to mark Lin's 210th birthday

President Jiang Zemin wrote an inscription for the ceremony, which reads: "Lin's patriotism will live forever".

Lin was born here in 1785. In 1838 he was named imperial commissioner by the emperor of Qing Dynasty with the mission of confiscating opium in Guangzhou, Guangdong province, where the opium trade was rampant.
