BA begins talks on a merger with KLM

BELEAGUERED British Airways announced today it is to begin merger talks with Dutch airline KLM.

Any merger between the fierce rivals would lead to the creation of Europe's biggest airline and the third largest air carrier in the world - behind US giants United Airlines and American Airlines.

In a brief statement to the stock market BA - the self-styled "World's Favourite Airline" - said it had agreed to talks with KLM "on a possible combination of their business".
