Towards the end of his life Ernst Ludwig Kirchner took a revealing photograph of himself. It appears in the catalogue of the Royal Academy of Arts' new exhibition devoted to the artist and it shows a man whose film-star good looks have been ravaged by drugs and pain, and whose dominant emotion is of terror.

Hitler's annexation of Austria in 1938 had made Kirchner - whose work had been branded "decadent" by the Nazis - fear a similar invasion of Switzerland where he had taken refuge. He destroyed many of his printing blocks and some sculptures and attempted, unsuccessfully, to talk his lover ...
