THE military coup in Pakistan is only the latest army
intervention in politics during the country's 52-year history.
Pakistan was created an independent state in 1947 in the
partition of British India. The army immediately formed one of the
biggest power groups in the fledgling democracy.
The country declared itself a republic in 1956, and two years
later General Ayub Khan staged a military coup, assuming
presidential powers and abolishing the office of prime minister.
Martial law remained in force until 1962.
