Probation officers, so the myth goes, are predominantly young sociology graduates with little experience of the real world. In fact, 50 per cent of probation officers are second careerists and come from a wide range of previous jobs. Among the East London team's probation officers, for instance, is an ex-social security officer, an ex-accountant, an ex-linguist, an ex-conference organiser and an ex-nursery nurse.
