Gentian shows its colours
|
There's a well-kept secret about the gentians that most gardeners
don't know.
It's the other gentians. The popular gentians are blue, flower in
spring and autumn, and have a well- earned reputation for fractious
and unpredictable behaviour.
The other gentians flower between midsummer and autumn, and they
aren't all blue. Some of them are pink, some are yellow. In the
Andes of South America there are red gentians.
All in all, it's difficult to understand how gentian flowers came
to be synonymous with blue.
World-wide, the blue gentians are probably in a minority. White
