Grenade business booming

WELLINGTON -- Bill Sharplin's backyard business is booming.

The 54-year-old father of three manufactures grenades in a self- described "rough as guts" backyard operation, based in a converted garage behind his Foxton Beach home.

Now the Horowhenua entrepreneur has exploded on to the defence industry scene by scoring a lucrative contract to supply his grenades to the New Zealand Army.

Kiwi army bosses are full of praise for the grenades, and Mr Sharplin is already gearing up to target the overseas market, with negotiations under way with potential customers in Singapore and Australia.
