The answer is sticks of powdered pigments, bound together with gum or resin and called pastels. The art of pastel painting is featured in a new exhibition of works by Burney and Glover, two Canterbury artists who are maintaining the art of painting in dry colours.

Evolving from Renaissance chalk drawing, pastels reached their pinnacle in 18th-century Europe when artists such as de la Tour, Cosway, and Liotard used the medium to create velvety, luminous portraits.
