Destruction of gum trees 'tragic'

Emotions are running high at the foot of Marlborough's Waihopai Valley as 100-year-old gum trees are being "ripped out like carrots" to make way for vineyard development.

Federated Farmers president and Waihopai Valley farmer David Dillon said the community was horrified that Auckland-based Delegats Wine Estate had removed one plantation of snow gum trees and was now starting on a second.

Mr Dillon said the reason given to him by Delegats was that "the land was too valuable".
