Hungarian visionary whose genius helped shape a movement

HIS NAME might be unfamiliar, but Rudolf von Laban was a seminal
figure in the development of 20th-century modern dance.
During the first two decades of the century, he and pupils such as
Mary Wigman and Kurt Jooss laid down the roots of German modern
dance, an expressionist, anti-ballet and symbolist art form in which
movement represented the externalisation of the performer's inner
state.
From those beginnings the style spread, eventually reaching
America where it was to influence Martha Graham, the pioneer of
American modern dance.
