New Zealand will soon need to add to its fleet of combat
warships.
IAN STUART looks at some of the options.
New Zealand defence officials have started a world search for
warships that could replace the ageing steam frigate HMNZS
Canterbury
when it is retired by 2005 at the latest. They have not ruled out a
third Anzac frigate.
By the end of the year the navy will have three operational
frigates -- two new Anzac class ships, HMNZS Te Kaha and the yet to
be commissioned Te Mana, and the 30-year-old Leander class frigate
HMNZS Canterbury.
