Westland business finds cash in pests

GREYMOUTH -- A South Westland possum-product entrepreneur is aiming to turn the country's main pest into a money-making venture.

Peter Gray's first order is expected to inject about $750,000 into Hokitika's economy.

Mr Gray has taken out a patent on a new possum fur product after experimenting with bleaching techniques. His first bleached fur order left for a North Island manufacturer on Friday. Mr Gray, who until recently manufactured possum products at Ross that included fur-lined slippers, Davy Crockett hats, and fur-lined jackets which sold to tourists around the country, estimates that ...
