Woman ill after mixup over poison puffballs

An Ashburton woman became seriously ill after mistaking poisonous
puffballs for truffles.
The woman, 51, thought the fungi growing beneath her garden oak
tree were black truffles, a French delicacy introduced to New
Zealand
in the early 1980s.
She picked them, fried them in butter and ate them for lunch.
Ashburton doctors Dean Harris and Rhonu Ghose wrote to the New
Zealand Medical Journal describing the case and raising concerns
about the incidence of poisonous fungi being mistaken for truffles.
They said that within 15 minutes of eating the fungi, the
