The confusion about a proposal that a Whakatane-based regional council should have designated Maori seats illustrates again how any Maori issue has the capacity to become contentious. It also shows, if further proof were needed, how polarised New Zealand First is. Winston Peters opposes the measure. The Minister of Maori Affairs, Tau Henare, is all for it. The Associate Treasurer, Tuariki Delamere, is somewhere in between.
