The Estorick Collection of 20th-century Italian art in north London owns one early masterpiece by Giorgio de Chirico. It is called Melanconia; it dates from 1912, and it is a perfect example of what the English Surrealist Gordon Onslow Ford once called "Chirico City" - large, desolate piazzas; heavy, looming shadows; steeply arcaded buildings; the odd very small, ill-defined figure or two lost amid all the desolation; the chuff-chuff of a steam locomotive hurrying along to some unknowable elsewhere in the background; aggressively illogical perspectives.
