PAUL HAWKINS was a very well-liked and assiduous constituency MP, who came rather late to national politics after gaining South West Norfolk in October 1964. "Norfolk do different," they used to say, and South West Norfolk certainly did. Although the Conservatives had taken the seat in 1951, Labour had regained it in 1955, had held it relatively comfortably in the 1959 by-election and retained it, although by only 78 votes, in the general election which followed.
