Of London streets and eternal vigilance

I NOTE in David Verran's review of Mrs P's Journey (December 9)
that "Before 1936, Londoners had only large ordnance maps to find
their way around the British capital's 23,000 streets".
Not so. The well-equipped traveller of 1907 would have had a copy
of Up to Date Atlas and Guide to London, published by G W Bacon & Co
Ltd, 127 The Strand, London, and sold for one shilling.
This little gem is in the same format and fulfilled the same
purpose as the modern A to Z and covered the area of London that
then mattered, namely the area embracing Cricklewood, Hackney Marsh,
Dulwich and Roehampton.
