``Autumn Water'', an exhibition of wood engravings and carvings
opened at the Salamander Gallery this week featuring work by
Hokianga-based Alan Gale.
Born in Lower Hutt in 1947, Alan Gale moved to Waiotemarama in the
South Hokianga in 1972, and established a workshop in a remote bush
valley.
He set about the task of teaching himself to carve wood and his
raw material came from kauri heads left at the top of an old bullock
rack by colonial sawmillers. After splitting slabs from the heads,
he was soon producing quality hand-adzed furniture and sculpture
which he complemented with bone carving.
