``Ways of Being'': paintings by Joanna Braithwaite at the Brooke Gifford Gallery until July 19.

Last seen painting attractive but rather decorative schemes of ships and swimmers, Joanna Braithwaite has returned to a subject matter closer to that of her early career.

Here, in broadly applied sweeps of thick impasto, the links between human and animal nature are stressed, the thin veneer which separates us examined. The artist's joy in handling paint resonates, mixed with a droll sense of humour. ``Little Monkey'' is a signal work showing Braithwaite's command over her medium. Midnight blue ...
