SHAKESPEARE: AN ILLUSTRATED STAGE HISTORY, edited by Jonathan Bate and Russell Jackson, Oxford University Press, $59.95.

Reviewed by IAIN SHARP

SCHOLARS do not know for sure when or where the first performance of a work by William Shakespeare took place, but there's general agreement that the bard's earliest plays, Titus Andronicus and the three parts of Henry VI, were acted somewhere in England in the early 1590s.

Thus, give or take a few years, this handsome (but expensive) volume can be welcomed as a celebration of four centuries of Shakespearian productions.
