Historic artwork in Jones County to get new home; Going to Des Moines: Plaster-of-Paris piece is being removed from a building that is set for demolition

MONTICELLO, Iowa - A crew in Jones County is working meticulously to remove a piece of Civil War history from a building that's set for demolition.

The State Historical Building will be home to the 6-by-12-foot artwork for the next five years. The plaster-of-Paris piece, which was set in the wall of a former high school and Masonic lodge, was created by artist Carl Rohl-Smith, of Chicago.

"It's just fantastic," said Rose Rohr, secretary of the Monticello Heritage and Cultural Center. The work depicts a scene of Civil War soldiers coming home from battle and is called "Triumphal Return."
