Firm brought good news, but nothing else; 1996: Penda Corp. announced 150 new jobs in Platteville, but it never came

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. - The people of Platteville were in need of some good news in the fall of 1996. On Halloween of that year, they thought they had a real treat.

The mood in the southwest Wisconsin city was a kind of prolonged shock. Eight months earlier, Platte-ville's largest employer, Advance Transformer, announced it was moving its operation to Mexico, taking with it 560 jobs.

The news on that Halloween seemed so good that then-Gov. Tommy Thompson made a special trip to Platteville to proudly proclaim it at a ceremony.
