Biographer John Chilton makes the St. Joseph connection clear in
his definitive 1991 work, "The Song of the Hawk: The Life and
Recordings of Coleman Hawkins."
He was born Nov. 21, 1904, in the family home at 1713 Angelique
St. His parents, who themselves were born in St. Joseph and
Plattsburg, introduced him to the piano and the cello at an early
