MAX REINHARDT was one of the foremost British publishers of the second half of the 20th century. As owner of the Bodley Head, the publishing house founded by John Lane, which he rescued and revitalised over a period of 30 years when he acquired the firm from Sir Stanley Unwin in 1957, he published the work of authors such as George Bernard Shaw, Graham Greene, Charles Chaplin, William Trevor, Maurice Sendak, Muriel Spark, Alexander Solzhenitsyn and Alistair Cooke, and he was also responsible for the expansion of one of the outstanding children's books lists in modern publishing.
