Thomas Bata; Led Global Shoe Firm Named for Family

Thomas Bata, 93, the Czech-born head of the worldwide family shoe
empire that bears his name, died Sept. 1 at a hospital in Toronto.
No cause of death was reported.
Mr. Bata's father, Tomas, founded the shoe business in Zlin, in
what is today the Czech Republic, in 1894, and it would later swell
into the giant Bata Shoe Organization.
Born Sept. 17, 1914, in Czechoslovakia, Thomas Bata exiled
himself in Canada in 1938 after the Nazi rise to power in Germany.
