He was the school dunce who became a hero of Arctic exploration and inspired The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, and now an exhibition in Thomas Hearne's home town shows that he has inspired generations of artists too.

Hearne, who grew up in Beaminster, Dorset, was the first European to reach the Arctic Ocean by land, making an extraordinary 1,300- mile trek into the frozen wastes of northern Canada.

Employed by the Hudson's Bay Company, he was hunting for copper, and the fabled North West Passage between the Atlantic and Pacific. With the help of native guides, and carrying a 60lb pack, as well ...
