Hopes that the biggest event in the Welsh cultural calendar will be staged in the borderlands for the first time in nearly 100 years have been dashed.

Organisers of the Eisteddfod have announced that neither the 2010 nor 2012 events will be held in rural Monmouthshire as was widely believed.

Many thought Monmouthshire's claim was written in stone and it was only a matter of choosing the date to bring the festival as close to the English border as it could get.

But officials have now said the 2010 and 2012 festivals will go to the Welsh valleys and the wealthy Vale of Glamorgan.
