Shelton may close 100-year-old Lafayette School

SHELTON -- The school board must decide whether the city should close the almost 100-year-old Lafayette School and many residents say they want it to stay open because it's the only school in the downtown area. Lafayette School is at 54 Grove St.; it is an elementary school that serves pre-kindergarten through sixth grade and has an enrollment of about 400 students. Built in 1911, it has 21 classrooms.

Lafayette's fate -- and redistricting of the city's schools -- is up for discussion by he Board of Education at 7:15 p.m. Wednesday at Shelton High School.
