Obituary: Simon Smith - Mordant playwright
|
THE PLAYWRIGHT Simon Smith was one of those gifted and fearless
writers who could be frank about Englishness in a way which unsettled
even as it entertained. Like Joe Orton he could gleefully identify
the low-water mark of English taste and morality and then expose it
with accuracy and wit.
Smith first came to national attention when he won the Croydon
International Play Writing Competition in 1996 with Fat Janet is
Dead. The play, directed by Jessica Dromgoole, went on to be
performed at the 27th Premio Candoni Arte Terma, Italy's leading
playwriting festival that year.
