There were moments during the Queen's Jubilee when HM looked as
though she was about to be sick: when she was forced to walk home
under an armed escort of children, for example, or share equal
billing at a rock concert with Shirley Bassey. Some things just don't
update well, and 76-year-old sovereigns are among them. It was
unnatural, like watching a cat fetch slippers. You found yourself
wondering whether it mightn't just be kinder to pension the old girl
off and call it a day.
