Sir John Barbirolli was a regular visitor to the Cheltenham Music Festival in its early years, and the conductor would have been thrilled with the playing of this all-female quartet which has adopted his name.

Their recital sandwiched between Brahms and Beethoven the world premiere of String Quartet (2008) by the young Greek composer musician Evangelia Rigaki.

This was the result of a joint initiative between the festival and the Society for the Promotion of New Music.
