pounds420,000 price tag for city artist's arkwright portrait

Two galleries have launched a joint bid to buy a portrait by the Derby painter Joseph Wright.

London's National Portrait Gallery and the Harris Museum and Art Gallery, in Preston, Lancashire, are hoping to add the portrait of the British inventor and industrialist Sir Richard Arkwright to their collections.

They have three months to raise pounds420,000 and the appeal has been kick-started by the charity Art Fund, which has given pounds100,000 towards the purchase.
