Uruguayan president pays homage to Cuban hero Artigas

HAVANA, June 19 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Uruguayan President Tabare Vazquez Thursday paid homage to Cuba's liberation hero Gen. Jose Gervasio Artigas on the 224th anniversary of his birth.

Vazquez accompanied Havana historian Eusebio Leal in placing a floral offering in front of the bust of Artigas, which Uruguay presented as a gift to the Cuban people in 1945.

Vazquez told the Cuban press that Thursday was a "great day" to commemorate the birth of Artigas, a man that was denigrated, military defeated and expatriated for 30 years but faced ...
