Usefulness of pidgin tongues

This summer Juliet Johnston had some visitors from the Solomon
Islands. She noticed that the men (with New Zealand university
degrees) were speaking to their children in Pidgin English - even
though the children were confident English speakers. She's asked me
if I'd write about Pidgin English.
Forty years ago, my interest in Pidgin English was awakened by
R.A. Hall's book, Hands off Pidgin English!. This book was written
in the 1950s to defend Pidgin English in Papua New Guinea when there
was an attempt to ban it. Hall argued that Pidgin English was a
legitimate language - not just broken ...
