Victor Marie Hugo was born in the French town of Besancon 200 years ago, on 26 February 1802. He was something of a literary prodigy, winning a poetry competition sponsored by the Academie Francaise at the age of 15 and being awarded the Legion d'Honneur for services to literature in 1825. However, Hugo was fascinated by politics as well as literature. He won a seat in the National Assembly in 1848, and in 1851 was forced to flee the country when Louis Napoleon declared himself emperor.
