Marmalade, legend has it, was a chance invention. At some time in the 18th century, Mr Keiller, a Dundee grocer, acquired a load of Seville oranges from a ship driven into harbour by a storm. Confounded by these bitter oranges, his wife Janet tried cooking them with sugar, and orange marmalade was born. It sold so well in her husband's shop that it soon became the staple of every breakfast table in the land, and the name James Keiller & Son has ever since been associated with it.
