Maud's legacy to walkers
|
High on Wick Hill, near Bremhill, a picturesque village near
Calne, stands a monument to Maud Heath.
A vast stone column topped out with a statue of the lady herself
stands as testimony to the kind-hearted nature of this market
trader. Close on 600 years ago, she would make the weekly trek to
Chippenham market, selling butter and eggs from her smallholding
near Langley Burrell. Crossing the Avon's flood plain, she would
tire of a terrible road - full of holes and ruts - that was under
water following heavy rainfall.
Her benevolence shone through and she determined to do something
to help ...
