All 1,250 were snapped up on the day of publication nearly 150 years ago and yesterday the frenzy continued when an original copy of the book that shook the world was sold in the West.

After a flurry of bids poured into Dominic Winter Book Auctions from both sides of the Atlantic, a well preserved copy of Charles Darwin's On The Origin of Species went for pounds50,000. London- based dealer Peter Harrington emerged with the prized first edition, after seeing off bidders from Britain and America at the auction house at South Cerney, near Cirencester.
