Oneida tribe member to leave Indian affairs; Assistant secretary doesn't give reason

Washington -- Carl Artman, a member of the Oneida tribe of Wisconsin, has announced his resignation as the assistant secretary for Indian affairs at the Interior Department.

Artman, who was confirmed to the post by the Senate just over a year ago, will step down May 23.

Artman told Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne in his resignation letter that "the work we have done within Indian Affairs will leave not just a legacy but an infrastructure upon which American Indians and Alaska natives can build to secure their governmental, cultural and economic futures."
