Even on a flying visit like mine, there was a sense that the 50 minute flight had taken me somewhere different and distinctive. I don't speak Welsh. However, there is no escaping the fact that bilingual signs for places like Cardiff Castle give it added tourist value.

That is not to say that everyone in Cardiff was supportive of Welsh. The taxi driver who gave me a lift was not enamoured with the language but then supporters of lesser-used languages rarely drive taxis.
