The Royal Navy should be able to act in a "more robust" way to
deal with pirates, a former defence secretary said yesterday.
Lord King of Bridgwater raised the issue after newspaper claims
that the Navy had been told not to detain pirates for fear of
breaching their human rights or allowing them to claim asylum.
The instructions came to light last month after French commandos
seized a Somali pirate gang which had taken money from a luxury
yacht with 22 French citizens on board.
Junior defence minister Baroness Taylor of Bolton told peers at
question time that the Royal Navy "has got powers ...
