MT. BALDY VILLAGE - It's not yet mid-May, and the wilderness west of here is already in flames.

Like most mountains in Southern California, the brush is tinder dry, which makes the Big Horn Fire a disturbing sign of what could be ahead.

"The conditions seem to be about what it would be in July," said U.S. Forest Service spokeswoman Angie Lavell. "It's quite troubling."
