Primary to decide half of legislative positions: ; Dozens of candidates face no major opposition in general election

The general election isnt for nearly six months, but dozens of
West Virginia legislative candidates can relax after today. Thats
because nearly half the races for the House of Delegates wont have
major party opposition, along with about a third of Senate races,
according to an Associated Press analysis of candidate filings with
the Secretary of States Office. That can be problematic in a
democracy, with parties having little reason to be responsive in
districts they represent without challenge, civic groups argue.
