Shoppers and retailers have been hit by food costs rising at their fastest rate for 17 years.

Basic foodstuffs have rocketed in price since this time last year, with research showing the average fresh chicken has gone up in price from pounds2 to pounds3.54, a huge increase of 77 per cent.

A survey for website www.mysupermarket.co.uk found prices were going up faster than at any time since 1991.

A basket of 10 everyday items which would have cost pounds10.70 a year ago may now cost as much as pounds16.11.
