Founded predecessor to Black Panther Party

MOSSES, Ala. -- John Hulett, the civil rights pioneer who helped found a group that became the Black Panther Party, died Monday. He was 78.

He died at his home in Mosses, surrounded by family.

During the civil rights movement, Mr. Hulett worked to help blacks gain the right to vote and run for office despite intimidation from groups such as the Ku Klux Klan. He also became the first black to hold the office of sheriff and probate judge in Lowndes County.
