Monarchs favor butterfly weed
|
A showy native plant favored by naturalistic gardeners is the
bright orange butterfly weed (Asclepias tuberosa). Often associated
with dry meadows and prairies, it is an obvious choice for butterfly
gardens. The monarch butterfly feeds on the nectar-rich flowers and
lays her eggs on the foliage, which serves as food for the developing
caterpillars. After the seed pods split open in fall, silky threads,
each attached to a single seed, are released on the wind. Plant in
full sun in dry, well-drained soil. Cultivars such as 'Gay
Butterflies' include plants with yellow, red and orange flowers.
