S erpents have an unenviable reputation in Christian mythology - yet a creature which supposedly seduced Eve into "partaking of the flesh" has been warmly welcomed by the congregation of a Cornish village chapel.

The reptile in question was in fact returning to its flock after an absence of perhaps a hundred years - and it made an unholy racket when it arrived.

Serpent is the name given to an intriguing musical instrument which was once an important ingredient of Christian worship in churches and chapels across Cornwall and elsewhere.
